Meeting New Performance Measures and Identifying Barriers to Thromboprophylaxis

  Printer-friendly version

In this Expert Commentary, Dr Geno Merli addresses the barriers to the implementation of thromboprophylaxis in medically ill patients and explains the benefits of thromboprophylaxis in reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with venous thromboembolism in these patients. Dr Merli discusses the results of recent clinical trials and registries that address thromboprophylactic measures and the impact they have on current clinical practice. Through a careful dissection of the implementation of performance measure programs for VTE treatment and prophylaxis, Dr Merli provides insight as to the effectiveness of these programs in achieving their goal of improved quality of care for medical and surgical patients who are either at risk for or who have venous thromboembolic disease.
