GOAL OF THE ACTIVITY

Through completion of this activity, participants will consider the current crisis in the treatment of venous thromboembolism, the value of VTE prophylaxis, and the impact of recent recommendations from the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).


EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the pathophysiology and epidemiology of VTE
  • List characteristics that put patients at high risk for VTE
  • Discuss issues of patient selection, safety and efficacy in using antithrombotic regimens
  • Describe recommendations recently put forth by the ACCP and JCAHO and their impact on VTE prevention and treatment
  • Discuss pharmacoeconomic issues involved in management of VTE

At a symposium held at the American Medical Directors Association 2005 Annual Meeting in New Orleans, experts met to discuss prophylaxis in long-term care patients at risk for venous thromboembolism, or VTE. Presentations included the epidemiology of VTE (Victor Tapson); patient selection, safety, and efficacy of VTE prophylaxis (Jack Ansell); and cost-benefit issues involved in the management of VTE (James Groce). Topics addressed were relevant to a broad range of specialists, including medical directors, clinicians, and pharmacists involved in the long-term care setting.
