ThrombosisClinic Vol. 4, No. 1 Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism are manifestations of venous thromboembolism (VTE), a complication of malignancy that can have fatal consequences. The magnitude of the risk posed by VTEs is illustrated by the results of a recent prospective, observational study involving cancer patients scheduled to undergo surgery in which VTEs caused almost half of the deaths that occurred within the first 30 postoperative days. |
Triple Antithrombotic Therapy in Acute Coronary Syndromes Triple anticoagulant therapy—the simultaneous use of aspirin, clopidogrel, and warfarin—is becoming increasingly common as the population ages and coronary stenting is performed more often. Although this approach reduces the risk of thromboembolic events, it significantly increases the risk of bleeding. Unfortunately, few clinical trials have been conducted that might guide clinicians in the use of triple therapy. In this Update to the American Journal of Cardiology, the authors review the available evidence regarding the use of triple therapy and specifically identify the clinical situations or patients that would benefit from use of triple anticoagulant therapy. The authors also discuss the risks of triple anticoagulant therapy and highlight techniques to reduce this risk. |
Diagnosis and Treatment of VTE, DVT, and PE This American Journal of Medicine Update provides clinicians with a comprehensive up-to-date review of the clinical presentation, diagnostic modalities, and treatment guidelines for low- and intermediate-risk (nonmassive) PE. The update also describes diagnostic measures and current and evolving treatment strategies for DVT, defines massive and submassive PE, discusses risk-stratification tools for patients with submassive PE, and reviews the latest data on the efficacy of thrombolysis in different risk-stratification groups. |
Risk Stratification for Venous Thromboembolism in Hospitalized Patients In this update to the American Journal of Medicine, Judd Hollander, MD, MPH, Professor and Clinical Research Director in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, reviews the current literature on venous thromboembolism risk and methods to risk-stratify hospitalized patients. |
Case Vignettes - Atrial Fibrillation This educational activity consists of 5 cases that illustrate different aspects of the management of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). These cases are intended to further the understanding of and distinguish between various types of patients who have AF and illustrate the best treatment strategies for each. |
Thrombosis in Women This supplement to the second issue of the second volume of Gender Medicine will focus on Thrombosis in Women. Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a leading cause of death in the United States. Women may have additional risk factors that need to be addressed in VTE risk assessment scores. |
