ThrombosisClinic Vol. 4, No. 1
Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism are manifestations of venous thromboembolism (VTE), a complication of malignancy that can have fatal consequences. The magnitude of the risk posed by VTEs is illustrated by the results of a recent prospective, observational study involving cancer patients scheduled to undergo surgery in which VTEs caused almost half of the deaths that occurred within the first 30 postoperative days.

Triple Antithrombotic Therapy in Acute Coronary Syndromes
Triple anticoagulant therapy—the simultaneous use of aspirin, clopidogrel, and warfarin—is becoming increasingly common as the population ages and coronary stenting is performed more often. Although this approach reduces the risk of thromboembolic events, it significantly increases the risk of bleeding. Unfortunately, few clinical trials have been conducted that might guide clinicians in the use of triple therapy. In this Update to the American Journal of Cardiology, the authors review the available evidence regarding the use of triple therapy and specifically identify the clinical situations or patients that would benefit from use of triple anticoagulant therapy. The authors also discuss the risks of triple anticoagulant therapy and highlight techniques to reduce this risk.
